Artist Bio

Born in 1952 Bob Sullivan, enjoyed playing with crayons and delighting his proud parents with visual creations which adorned the family refrigerator. From an early age Bob Sullivan began painting and drawing then followed his fascination for visual communication from Princeton, NJ through Berkshire School and Ithaca College where he majored in painting and received a Bachelor of Fine Art undergraduate degree. In 1975 after Ithaca, Bob Sullivan moved to New York City and studied for his Masters of Communication degree at Pratt Institute where his major was Communication Design.

In 1981 Bob Sullivan began his professional career as an assistant art director at Childrens Television Workshop in New York City, where he was fortunate in meeting and working with Milton Glaser, Herb Lubalin and Seymour Chwast as well as many of the other legendary illustrators and designers whose work adorned the pages of Sesame Street Magazine.

Lured by higher salaries and more responsibilities Bob Sullivan joined Charlie Piccarillo (famous for his Doyle, Dane, Bernbach Volkswagon advertising) at Foote, Cone Belding and worked there as an art director until 1991. With colleague and mentor Bert Kemp, Bob Sullivan started a creative department for Gannett Outdoor advertising where his responsibilities included travelling to the creative departments of advertising agencies throughout New York City and around the US and Canada, encouraging the creative use of billboards.

Painting, galleries and museums always have and always will be a big part of Bob Sullivans joy and inspiration. Light reflected off the waters surrounding East Hampton has attracted many great landscape painters including William Merrit Chase, Winslow Homer and Thomas Moran. In the 20th century, East Hampton continued to attract popular figures in the art world like William de Kooning and Larry Rivers and Jackson Pollack.

Today Bob Sullivan paints en plein air in the limitless locations around his home and joins other painters in workshops, seminars and classes which abound on the East End. Marc Dalessio and Ben Fenske visit from Croatia & Florence to teach and paint and other great artists like James Albinson and Linda Capello put on workshops throughout the Hamptons.

Bob Sullivan is a member of the Artist Alliance of East Hampton, Guild Hall, The Parrish Art Museum and the Southampton Artists Association. His work is in many private collections and he exhibits in local shows and by request in non formal art venues. Bob Sullivan is not represented by any gallery and sells his work directly online.

When he is not painting Bob Sullivan can be found captaining one of his sail boats or fishing vessel.
